BODY WORLDS Amsterdam
The quest for love and happiness dominates our lives, but what defines whether we are happy or not? The anatomy museum BODY WORLDS: The Happiness Project in the heart of Amsterdam takes visitors on a thrilling voyage of discovery through the human body, in search of what makes us happy and the impact of happiness on our health. More than 200 anatomical specimens of real human bodies show the complexity, resilience and vulnerability of the body. They show how our organs work, and the effect of common diseases.
We initiated the establishment of the first permanent BODY WORLDS exhibition in the world. We operated and promoted it for its first two years.
The original exhibition of real human bodies
BODY WORLDS – also known as Körperwelten – is the original exhibition of real human bodies, created by German anatomist Dr. Gunther von Hagens. He is the inventor of the ground-breaking plastination technique, that makes it possible to display human and animal anatomy in a way that the tiniest detail can be seen and studied. Up to the thinnest hair vein!
BODY WORLDS is the only human body exhibition that is based on an exclusive donor program. The worldwide database holds almost 16,000 donors, of which around 13,000 from Germany.
Von Hagens’ BODY WORLDS exhibitions have prompted a worldwide revolution. Never before has an exhibition had such a momentous effect on the way people view themselves and their bodies. It premiered in Japan in 1995 and has welcomed over 45 million visitors worldwide to this day, making it the most successful exhibition in the world, to this day.
